Strictly speaking, the term « print » refers to the result of printing an engraving. The word engraving covers all techniques that make use of hollows or incisions on a master form or a template.
The hollow or the incision is made by using a tool, a point for example, or a corrosive product like acid, on a template often made of wood or metal. After being inked, the template is applied to the paper.
The term print, which was rather restrictive in the early stages of the art form, was then extended to works from processes using other techniques, such as lithography or serigraphy
It is today considered that the term print covers all printed works resulting from a manual reproduction process.
